Greetings, folks -

Any suggestions for a wrist-mounted SPG to be used as a backup only? We both dive Oceanic PP2's, and are very happy with them, but are looking for a little redundancy. Nothing fancy required. Ideas???

Thanks!

You mean with a hose attached? I've never heard of anyone doing this. Sounds to me like it would be really awkward. Why not just clip off a bare SPG to a D-ring?

There are wrist-mounted AI computers but at around $1000 or so that's not what I would consider a backup.

SPG means Submersible Pressure Gauge

By definition, this must have some connection to the compressed gas cylinder to be able to report the pressure. The connection is a hose or a wireless transducer. The hose version would not likely be mounted to your wrist and takes a separate opening on your 1st stage from your normal gauge console. The transducer requires its own port on the 1st stage but the readout computer is usually wrist mounted.

Do you mean a wrist mounted depth gauge and/or bottom timer?

Well, dopey me ... my brain and my fingers were doing two different things. I was thinking depth gauge and it didn't come out that way. Yes, that's exactly what I meant, depth gauge. I dive with a watch and my PP2; having a depth gauge and my watch would give me some kind of awareness of my situation in the event of computer failure.

I use a Timex Helix dive watch that gives me depth, dive time, and dive log. Here's one of many on Ebay, how does $1.99 sound?

I carry an analog depth gage, in a bungied wrist mount from my old computer, and a watch. Saved my *** acouple of weeks ago, so I think it's a terrific idea.

I use an Atom 2.0 to backup my PP2. Not quite what you were looking for, but.... :D

Highdesert, aside from the dive watch with depth indicator suggested above, my suggestions for an accurate and reliable redundant depth-measuring device are either: (1) a simple back-up wrist computer (digital), generally under $250, less if you buy used, or (2) a depth gauge module (analog) $60, (e.g., http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/GNSDG.html) which you can put in a Wrist Boot for Computer, $15 (search Scubatoys' website for "Empty Computer Wrist Boot").
Hope this helps.
Dive safely.
