I was always told not to go to isolated beaches alone (or with only with other person) [-]in St Croix[/-] anywhere.
Fixed it for you. ;)

If you are using the same prudence on any island that you would use at home you shouldn't have any problems. You dont go to bad neighborhoods & you avoid being alone in isolated places. One pice of advice though. Leave nothing in your car and leave it unlocked. Let em steel the rental papers but dont give them an excuse to break a window.

:rofl3: Where is Pilotfish when you need him ?

Sorry, just could not resist. :D

I was chatting with some Caribbean old-timers the other night and they were telling me some really interesting stories to the effect that St Croix has a reputation for crime that it possibly doesn't deserve stemming from two incidents in its history which really stained it.

The first was the 1972 Fountain Valley Golf Club massacre. The second was the looting which followed Hurricane Hugo in 1989, which was apparently so bad that the 18th Airborne division and the FBI had to be sent to stop local law enforcement from looting. Amongst those arrested was Capt. Adelbert Bryan, Frederiksted police commander.

Once you get a reputation for lawlessness it is just hard to lose.
