I was certified by SSI a few years back in Australia. Now, I would like to get my byfriend invovled. Is there really much of a difference between SSI, PADI and NAUI. Also, any recommendations on shops offering certification in the Philadelphia area?

That's a matter of opinion. I believe there's a great deal of difference; others will tell you the opposite. Just about everyone agrees there are big differences from one course to another, some place more emphasis on why those differences exist on the instructor, others on the agency, some on a combination.

Welcome to SB,

But this forum is for Introductions. This thread will be moved to New2Scuba for better coverage.

Hope you'll come back here and introduce yourself, so we can welcome you appropriately.

Its not so much the agency is it is the Instructor. I would find a shop you are comfortable with and an Instructor that you have confidence in. Good luck.

This has to be one of the most worn-out subjects.
Try going into advanced search and typing "NAUI SSI PADI" and just search in titles.
Try this thread for agency bashing

Moved from Introductions & Greets forum.

I teach both PADI and SSI. In the beginning there is little difference except with the training philosophy. However, the Advanced Open Water requirements are very different. 5 dives (PADI) vs. 12 dives (SSI) and required specialties for PADI, SSI lets you choose. Can't help you with the shops in PA. Good luck in your travels. Try CA diving when you get a chance, some of the best diving in the US.

I am a dive master working in the south Jersey area. I have PADI and Naui ratings for different things. What I like about NAUI is the instructor can gear the course material towards his students where PADI is by the book. I think the most important thing is finding a good instructor first and then as you move along in your traning decide on PADI or NAUI. If you are in Philly area I would recomend Northeast Scuba supply. If you are in South Jersey there are some other people I can recomend. Good luck

I found this in Wreck Valley forum and moved it to Basic Scuba Discussions.
