I'm a Fish!
OK, great responses on the PADI swim times for DM thread. Completely figured out. Now I am trying to see the difference between agencies for physical fitness/stamina.

Does SSI even have any requirements for swimming like PADI does for their DM program?

To qualify the question, I did download their standards and could not find anything concerning a stamina/swim test. Thanks

OK then, I can assume that SSI does not have a swim test for endurance like PADI does, otherwise someone would have spoken up by now.

They do have watermanship tests. I don't remember off the top of my head what the times/ point values are. I believe they are somewhat similar to PADI's tests. I know the candidate must do a 400yd swim, 800yd with snorkeling equipment, 100yd diver tow with both divers in full equipment & a water tread with the last 2 min. hands out of the water. If I remember correctly, SSI also now requires an underwater swim with mask, fins snorkel of 50yds.

:rofl3: then you would be wrong with both of your assumptions. The requirements for the water proficiency is not in the standards it is in the trainers manual. :D Not all trainers have the time to check in here everyday, give them a chance to check in.

When I get to my office on Monday, if somebody has not chimed in, I will give you the requirements. There is a timed swim and water tread requirement.

I seem to remember that it was something like 20 laps in a pool, but don't rememeber the size of the pool, so that's not helpful.

There's also a reasonably long "treading water" and a "float".

flots.

Very interesting, I found and downloaded the SSI standards and they call this "watermanship".

There is no single set of rules for watermanship as the requirements vary for each different level of certification, from junior scuba all the way through tech diving specialties.

I was specifically looking at the DM program and all of the professional levels do not give specifics, it only says "watermanship". Up to and including OW gives specifics, then the tech side gives specifics. All of the pro levels from DG to all of the instructor levels have no specifics.

For example:

Indoor diver through OW requires-
Students in the Open Water Diver
program are to demonstrate effective watermanship
skills that include a 200-yard swim or a 300-yard swim
using a Snorkeling System and a 10-minute survival
float without the use of any aids.

An advanced wreck diver needs:
Each diver enrolled in the program must complete an
effective Watermanship skills evaluation that includes:
–– A 400-yard / 365-metre surface distance swim
using a mask, snorkel and fins,
–– A 15-minute survival swim / float without the use
of mask, snorkel, fins or other swimming aids.
–– Students must also be able to swim a horizontal
distance of 30 ft. /10 m. underwater, exhaling
continuously and successfully initiate an air sharing
ascent while wearing all of the equipment required
for their TechXR Advanced Wreck training dives.

A Technical Wreck Diver needs:
Each diver enrolled in the program must complete
an effective Watermanship skills evaluation that
includes:
–– *A 800-yard / 730-metre surface distance swim
using a mask, snorkel and fins,
–– *A surface swim of at least 400 yards / 365 metres
while wearing full technical wreck diving gear
including (a) stage cylinder(s).
–– *A 15-minute survival swim/float without the use
of mask, snorkel, fins or other swimming aids.
–– *Students must also be able to swim a horizontal
distance of 50 ft. / 15 m. underwater, exhaling
continuously and successfully initiate an air
sharing ascent while wearing all of the equipment
required for their TechXR Technical Wreck
training dives.

However DG and all of the other instructors just say-
Pass a watermanship evaluation

I evidently just learned more about "SSI DM" and their Watermanship Evaluations than the OP has learned. My education came by skimming old threads in the "SSI Forum" for 10 minutes. :idk:

Why not try looking back through the old threads in the SSI Forum, and then asking an inteligently worded question in the SSI Forum. :shakehead:

halemano, I posted in the cert agencies q&a forum. I could not find the specific information that I recentlly posted here after finding the standards. Could you please provide me with the link that gave as much info as I found on my own? I searched the SSI area and found nothing as specific as what I did once I found the location of the actual standards.

What information can you add that will help answer this question?
