Going to the Bahamas on Friday, and was wondering if they allow stainless steel backplates in carry on luggage. Any tips or first hand experiences would be dandy! Thanks a pile!

No problems at all. I've been flying with it for over 50 000 miles (it flew around the world with it in carry on :)

I carry on an aluminum plate with no problems.

My steel plate goes in my hand luggage along with laptop and camera housing. Had no problems so far. Its usually the 4 regulator first stages stuffed in there that flags up on x-ray.

Yes, you are absolutely allowed to carry it on. It IS worth carrying, believe me: I've had too many airplane delays affecting the timely arrival of my equipment (even missing the first day of diving, on more than one occasion), so to all intents and purposes, I take my gear as carry-on. It can be done.

My SO and I pack our harnesses (both with steel plates...him with 12 lb and me with 6 lb) in a wee carry-on wheelie suitcase. There's also other dive paraphenalia you can fit in there, if you pack judiciously...low-profile mask-cases, for example, booties, and the like. I shove my back-up flashlights into my booties...you get the idea. The plate shows up as a big slab of something on the X-ray machine...just know that you WILL be asked about it, and that you'll probably have to open your case. No biggie, especially if you're in a locale that sees a lot of divers passing in and out. Just get there a bit early...you'll need it after your friendly TSA official has finished disemboweling your case, and can't figure out how to repack it so that everything fits!

Wear your backplate under your jacket, say that it is a back brace, that way it won't count against your carry on luggage weight, you'll have to remove it for the scanner

I wear a thick coat or fleece even in hot climates purely so i can put reg 1st stages and other heavy stuff in there to get around that.

I imagine you with one of these coats.:) Carry-On Coat from SCOTTEVEST/SeV - Carry-On Coat with Hidden Pockets - The Ultimate Carry-On Coat for Travel

Ohhh noooo planes headed to Cozumel are going to start going down. I can see a plane full of scuba divers sneaking their entire dive kit in their new James Bond travel coats and overloading the plane. I hope someone doesn't figure out how to modify one of the pockets to fit a steel 120 as well lol. In all seriousness I do like they way you guys think it is great.
