While other divers were out getting sensational video and stills of mating squid at Veterans Park, we missed out on the action. Since one can't predict when or where a squid run will occur, we were just happy to see squid eggs by the White Point outfall pipe earlier this month. Unexpectedly, a week later at the same spot, another wave of adult squid came to mate, lay eggs, and die.
The usual predators take advantage of dead and dying squid on the seafloor, but I'd never seen squid attacked in the water column. Blacksmith mobs sprang up around each lone squid, biting and tearing at the soft parts, and wrestling it away from other fish. I had barely enough time to swim over to the frenzy before the fish had finished off the tastiest morsels.
The marvelous squid eye, and the red, yellow, and black chromatophores that allow it to change color.
