WOAH! That shark seemed either awfully happy or awfully spooked. Probably the former... Maybe a mating ritual? Or an after mating rejoice?

That is an everyday thing for most sharks... and they are far from graceful when breaching that is the most controlled shark breach I have seen. We saw it all the time off shore with the makos around summer.
We could never get a "this is why they do it" answer but some said it was to get the parasites off and others said it was to bust up and stun prey.
Never the less it was always amazing to see a mako in the distance upwards of 20' out of the water like that.

Sometimes, a shark just has to dance...

Looks like a spinner shark in Florida. These guys are feeding, swimming and spinning up through schools of baitfish. If you surf enough in Florida you will get your chance to see them.

Hi Tailchaser,

I know they breach but I've never seen one do it like that. You said you've seen them breach off shore, is that off shore in Ventura?

I ran sportfishing charters out of Newport for a few years thats where I saw all the sharks. We would fish Catalina and Clemente and anything south to the border offshore. Most of the sharks we got into were just in passing we would see a fin stop and throw some bait and pick it up... Many times usually in the distance you would see one flipping and flying. I was running a shark trip one night and we had one jump right next to the rail I was sure he was going to jump in the boat. All the breaching sharks we saw were makos, makos were a majority of what we played with.
