I tell students that the best way to cover a lot of ground underwater is to go dead slow. Water is thick, trying to push it aside requires effort, effort requires air.
Therefore: fast diver = less air time = less ground covered.
I usually demonstrate this at the end of a scuba tour. The speedy teenagers are constantly swimming around, exerting themselves and burning a terrific amount of air. When we surface, they usually grumble about the short dive time, and the attractions they missed. I then make them look at thier gauges again. 500-600 pounds. Then I show them my gauge, 1000 - 1200 pounds. I explain that they are lithe 16 year olds who can still run a few miles before lunch while I am a fat 50 year old codger. I then explain how slowly I swim, and how I extend my glide between every frog kick, and how I use less air swimming slowly, hence; how much more ground I cover.
Being 16 year olds, they never learn the lesson, however, I have done my best.
Why do I swim slowly? It's the only way to cover a lot of ground!
Oh yeah, as for the fast DM: you can try the trick I learned way early in my DM career. When the fast guy gets moving and I can't keep up, I sneak up behind them and latch onto their yoke. Then they are free to drag me all over. I have plenty of air when they finally give up.:D

You can tell people anything you want but in telling them it odes not make it so, some would prefer to move on along, your opinions on the subject will not change their personality or interests.

Latching on to my yoke, lol, might present a problem, I might just bump the scooter to speed setting 10. I don't wear out all that easy either, after a couple of miles I would probably drop you off and let you swim back on your own.:rofl3:

A scorpion came to rivers edge and pondered the dangerous crossing. There was a frog sunning on a rock nearby. Sir Frog said the scorpion, might you swim me to the other side. The frog asked the scorpion, Mr. Scorpion, no, you will surely sting me? The scorpion said, no Sir Frog, I shall not sting you because I cannot swim and I will drown. The frog thought a moment and then said, OK, I will swim you to the other side, hop on my back. The scorpion climbed aboard and off they went and then, said the frog to the scorpion in mid stream, why did you sting me, now we will both surely die? The scorpion said "because Sir Frog, it is in my nature."

So, you have to ask yourself, when you play that grab hold of the yoke game, is he a friendly frog or a deadly scorpion?

The guide almost broke the speed of sound whizzing by reefs and all kinds of life! Im a relatively fit person and I was extremely out of breath!
I've had dive buddies like this. I've learned to just not bother trying to keep up with them - and it just turns into a solo dive - and that's just fine with me.

Anyway, im just curious as to why people dive like this?
Beats the hell out of me. Maybe they're moving real fast in hopes of finding something "big" and just don't care about the small stuff.

Exactlly. We're in agreement. (check my post)

Nor would I try to latch onto the yoke of a scootering diver. That would be dumb. I wouldn't expect a scootering diver to buddy up with a non-motorized diver. That too, would be dumb.
Let's not do dumb things, OK?

Hey Nemrod!
I just remembered! You're the "minimalist gear guy"! Where did the scooter come from!
:D
Besides, you solo dive. Whatever you do is cool with me. Fact is, I envy the whole "I dive as I like thing" you got going. I guarantee, I will only wave in a friendly fashion as you zip by! :eyebrow:
