We have been 'hiding' this back in the thread about the Regina dive we did last weekend, but I thought I'd post it here for all to see.

In short, I made a pretty good boo-boo during the dive, and this is what my buddy saw.....

"Introducing MushroomCloud_Tom
There should be several funny stories posted about our trip on Saturday. This is just my contribution.

Frankenmuth_Tom and I dumped our BC's and started flying down the line to the Col. A.B. Williams. We like to do this at a fairly high rate to max our bottom time. Plus, it is just plain fun to play Skydiver underwater. I was slightly behind Tom on our freefall to the wreck.

Somewhere in the descent our other dive buddy Mr. Murphy showed up and hid Tom's inflator hose under the edge of the pony tank he had slung under his left arm.

As we approached the wreck Tom was fumbling around his shoulder trying to locate the hose. Then he started pumping air into his drysuit in a desperate attempt to stop himself.
It didn't work.

Tom went SPLAT on the deck and a huge cloud of silt arose around him. Leaving a nice marker for everyone showing where the ascent line was hooked up.

Now, Tom must have been thinking "Thank you Mr. Murphy, may I have another?", because his trip to the bottom wasn't done yet.

The ascent line was at an angle due to a slight current and Tom had built up plenty of momentum. So Tom bounced about 3 feet off the deck, careened over the railing, and embedded himself into the mud bank just off the side of the wreck. Mushroom cloud #2 billowed out in an ever expanding sphere.

Now Tom finally located his inflator, lifted himself off the bottom, and based on his expression I am sure his thoughts are not fit to post on this board.

He flashed me a belated OK sign and we went on to have a great dive.
Thus, I have to propose that we officially rename my dive buddy to MushroomCloud_Tom.

Have a great day!

So if you were diving on the Col. Williams on Sunday, and the vis was so-so, you can blame me ;) I left my MARK on the wreck, and the mud bank just outside the hull. I have this mental image of leaving an imprint of a diver (like in a cartoon) on the sand and mud of the bottom, but insted I left a huge cloud of silt and quickly swam away, trying not to be seen leaving the scene of the incident.

What I have learned is to sling my pony under the OTHER arm so it isn't in the way of my inflator and SPG.

You kids have a good laugh at my expense and try to dive safe!

That's a pretty funny visual but I'll bet it was pretty scarry. Glad you're okay. I'm a novice diver and thought you were supposed to descend slowly. I'm not trying to be smart just curious as my computer has a warning on it if you descend or ascend to quickly. I guess this is one of the consequences of descending to quickly. Thanks for the lesson.

If the descent is controlled, it is slow enough. I assist in classes and we teach that descents should be slow to assist in ear clearing and stress at the bottom. I practice half of this. My first 30 ft is a little slow to clear my ears. If I plan to go to depths where I figure that narcosis or CO2 will be an issue, I tend to slow the descent to allow my body the chance to get used to depth.

But, I will clear ears fairly quickly and will descend as fast as my dive buddy and ears will allow past 20 ft. Many times, my buddy and I are the third and fourth diver in the water and the first and second divers on the wreck.

Do what you feel comfortable with. There were issues that caused this due to rig modification, but they happen. Yet another reason that I have a season pass to Gilboa. I would rather evaluate rig modifications there than on a wreck in the middle of the Great Lakes. Unpredictable things are known to happen. Ask my dive buddy at Gilboa about me underweighting myself getting used to my new STA the next day.

...a bit.

I fended off the deck with a gloved hand, as I did the railing that followed. I DID manage to hit the sand and mud over the side with my fins and kick up a pretty good cloud of goo.

As for comments about the speed of the descent, well, I'm going slow enough to clear without problem. What we are NOT doing is going hand-over-hand down the line like many divers do. We simply fly down the line until the bottom is in sight and then find neutral.

Bob, I was running a 'bit' heavy, as the new pony rig has added several pounds to my normal rig, and I didn't remove any weight from my belt. Remember that I have to go in a bit negative as I always dive with an AL80, and have to be neutral when it hits the 500lb limit on the way back up.

It must have been quite a visual, I have to admit..... ;)

Now I KNOW I don't want to dive with a pony :D Feisty little critters aren't they Tom?

Hilarious! Thanks for the laugh.....I needed it!!
Great visual...I keep replaying it in my mind and chuckleing... :11:

My wife did it once when the pull dump on her old Zeagle wing came apart.

She face planted herself in the gravel next to the bus at Gilboa during an Advanced Nitrox class I was teaching.

I couldn't figure out what was up until I saw the bubbles rising up from her shoulder everytime she tried to inflate the wing.

....snip.... So Tom bounced about 3 feet off the deck, careened over the railing, and embedded himself into the mud bank just off the side of the wreck. Mushroom cloud #2 billowed out in an ever expanding sphere.

ROTFLMAO!!!! I managed to avoid the force-5 belly laugh until i got to this part.... LOL!!!!
