So how far away are the fish that you usually spear. As in how long a shot do you usually take?

There is no good answer for your question. The first is to get as close as possible. But the real answer is that it depends on the speargun, the type of fish and the conditions.

In general, for clear water and open areas, you will want a longer speargun. You may be taking shots that are over 15 feet from your hand. If you are in limited visibility or shooting under ledges, then you are probably carrying a shorter gun and the effective range may be somewhat less.

Predator Pro 3G Speargun Shooting Distance Chart

I tried to copy a chart we have for our various sized guns which provides the range, but the formatting didn't work.

I hope it is OK to post a link to my website, if you scroll down to the bottom, we provide a chart.

If you have an idea of what type of visibility you expect and what general types of fish you will be targeting, I can provide some suggestions with respect to the appropriately sized gun for your needs.

Watch some videos from spearfishermen local to your area to get an idea of fish behavior and techniques that work where you are.i rarely shoot over 10' unless I have to.
