Hi
It's time for me to invest in my own speargun. I have ready up on the pneumatic / rubber band debate and am leaning towards a rubber band style gun.

Would like to hear the thoughts of you guys on what gun(s) you have.
Thanks for any input that you can lend me!

:)

Well it all depends on what kinda spearfishing that you are doing. Freediving or on scuba? Freshwater or saltwater? I do it all but mostly ocean spearfishing on scuba. I have made my own gun to fit the needs of what I do (tech spearfishing) however, if your on scuba I believe the best gun outta the box is a ocean rhino rx5. It's the easiest to use and the fastest to reload.. If your free diving I really like the Omer cayman e.t. 95..

Check out my YouTube channel to see these guns in action.

Hi Scubajohn
That's some cool videos you got there. Very helpful.

I also did some searching through Amazon (always loads of actual reviews from people that buy) and this site had some good speargun reviews too

Still got some thinking to do, but I don't think it'll be long before I reach a conclusion
Thanks

Check out the Mako spearguns. Great euro guns and you can't beat the warranty!

I am in the same boat as you. I am looking at getting my own spear gun sometime next year. I have heard and read good things about the Mako line as well. I like the shark fin tabs on the spear shafts, they just seem to make sense regarding the strength of the spear shaft. I have a buddy that uses a JBL 38 Special that he really likes but this gun has the notched type spear shaft.

The reason for fin tabs is so the bands can still be attached to the shaft in an enclosed track gun.. Jbl used a track but its not fully enclosed.. That is why jbl's shaft has cut-ins for the band attachment.. It really has nothing I do with strength.. They are welded on and I have had some break.. If u get an fin tab shaft you have to shoot open Muzzled or enclosed tracked guns.. Many of jbl's guns use a close muzzle system...

Hmmm...I was told the fin tabs were stronger shafts because they are not notched. I will have to look into that some more. Thanks.

Which is stronger a metal rod that has an additional tab welded onto it or a rod that has about 1/3 or more of the cross sectional area removed? This is not a hard question... Welded tabs should NEVER fall off or fail. If they do, the weld was defective.

If you are concerned with the strength of the shaft material itself, the south African steel shafts are considerably stronger than any stainless steel shaft I have used. There is just no comparison. You can buy inexpensive south African notched shafts too, they are stronger than comparable sized SS shafts..

I agree.. It seems like that should be stronger because of the weld... Just in my personal experience with spearguns and shafts, I have broke more fins than I have broke shafts at the cut-in... I can only speak from my experience... Maybe I've just had a bad run... I build guns and run spearfishing charters off of sc, so I get to play around with them alot... I'm having trouble with them rusting at the welds.. Just bad welding I guess..

I prefer fins because i really like enclosed track guns.... and the cut-ins get sharp the more you load em and will cut band cords.. I have gone through a bunch of bands because of that issue too..

I guess what I was trying to say was the primary purpose of the fin shaft is to be able to have an attachment point for and enclosed track gun or shoot open muzzle and have shaft choice.... Fins won't pass through a closed muzzle and you can't attach bands to a cut-in shaft if you put it in an enclosed gun... But you can shoot both through and open muzzle...

But I will say that I do put my guns and shafts through a ton of diving and shooting... And the shafts normally get bent before tabs break... Cobia and AJ's seem to enjoy bending them up... I try straightening them, they are just never the same :)

Ill look into that African steel. That may be the ticket
