I'm 16 and relitivly new to diving. What i'm after is a float to use which i can also use to hook my fish onto. I've seen a few guys diving where i am with them. Is there a special name for these or something. They have about 20 metres of rope between them and the float with a flag and hooks?
Would love some help.
Cheers

Not sure if there is a float sold with stringers. But you might want to check this out Speargun and Freediving Equipment He has floats and a hoop stringer that should do the job.

You can easily find a source closer to Australia, just do a search for freediving or spearfishing.

I mainly spear flathead, luderick and wrasse.

Edit: This may sound better and use might be able to point me in the direction. I swim off the beach most of the time. So i'm after something to put my fish on so i don't have to swim the 100's of metres back to the beach to store them. I want it conected to i line about 20 metres behind me so in case of a shark it'll go for that and not me.
Cheers :)

Here is another one to give you an idea. MAKO Spearguns - Store As far as I know this guy does not ship to Australia. But this should give you an idea how you want to set up your gear. The hook you refer to is just a hoop stringer attached to the float.
Its used to string killed fish. you can have it with you, or attached to the float.

Spearfishing Stringers
MAKO Spearguns - Stainless Steel Hoop of Death

And the best source for info might be your local divers using the equipment you seek.

BTW, you can attach the float to a small reel, or go with the more exotic float lines designed for spearfishing

You can hook the fish through the mouth, and out the gills, but I just drive the stringer through the eyes.

Hope this helps

BTW, that is not me in the picture

A cheap alternative to a float is a boogie board. You can customize it as needed since its foam and won't sink when you place your holes in it to attach your equipment. Plus it gives you a nice floating platform with little drag in the water while your diving. Bungee straps like the ones used on kayaks works great to strap stuff down.

Welcome to diving! It's a great sport if you know your limits and stay within them. I've always used a inner tube. I've got small one 8" I think, and a bigger tube 15" . I wrapped rope around the outside and attache hooks, fish stringer....I even have a hook on a short line to attach to my harness to keep me with the tube. I have a dive flag on 'em, also in a waterproof box attached to the inside of the tube I keep my cell phone and flare gun. And the line gives you a place to hang if you need to stop on the way up.

go to a hardware store get a 3 foot metal rod and 8 feet of thin s.s cable. cut cable in 1 foot sections. cut the rod in 4 inch pieces and sharpen on end on a grinder. drill a hole through center. crimp rods to one end of wire and at other end add a large snap swivel. on your bouy add a large loop of wire. as you spear a fish clip a stringer to the loop and push through eyes.

cost in USA about 8$
to buy the stringer pre made 20$ each
good luck and dive safe
