I know, I know there are portions around the island that are protected from fishing. As I understand it the protected waters only cover around 1/4 of the island. The northern part is off limits for some reason so that leave the other 1/4 of the island. I believe that is the south west area of the island. However as I understand it that particular area has pretty strong currents and most people dont even dive there let alone spear fish. So I am at a loss as to wear to go. Has anyone spear fished or recall anyone doing so while they were there? Is it possible to take a boat over to cancun and maybe book a trip from there? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I have never been to cozumel and I just so dearly love to spear fish. Maybe someone might know something about the lobsters there as well. I saw a tid bit somewhere on the web about lobster spearing in cancun but that maybe there was only certain times of the year that it was allowed. Thanks for the info

The locals are fairly protective of their turf; you may wind up getting hauled off to jail unless you are in the company of a local resident.
Same goes for the bugs.
You'd be much better off heading to the Middle Grounds out off of Tampa/St Pete, at least there they have big fish & the jails have toilet paper. :tease:

As a long time frequent visitor to Cozumel and a diver, I humbly request that you take your speargun somewhere else.

BTW, the island's southwestern waters are where a great deal of the best diving is, and is where the marine life is the most protected. Also, I believe that the Mexican government has (or will shortly) expanded the national park borders to completely encompass the island.

I went spearfishing with Leo in March 2009. I will be back in October 2010 and will spend a day with Leo again. He does a great job and really takes care of you. I believe his web site is - spearfishingtoday.com

We had a discussion on this recently, and Leo's trips are free diving AND spearfishing in Cozumel's waters (outside the marine park) is ONLY allowed as a free dive. No SCUBA allowed.

What is allowed and what occurs on a daily basis are two very different things.

bingo......gold star

If you think that it is just a matter of the ecology that there are very few large Grouper, Hog Fish and other delectable goodies in the park you are sadly mistaken. I see boats all the time on the reef, some have lights some dont.......and they are not night diving........oh........IMO

Diving has been great this trip. Have to leave tomorrow but a little rain certainly didnt spoil the incredibel diving as always.
