Sunkarm thats what I have come to realize when I bought the Ike housing but I was happy getting the Ike housing and saving for the strobes later. I was however curious if it were possible or if there were any reasons why someone would put a different strobe on the Ike housing.
Tsreimer good luck and Im sure you will enjoy the trip cant wait to get to Grand Cayman myself as I have not yet been to that part of the Carribean.

Crawl,

I believe you can attach some different strobe systems to the dSLR housings... though im not sure about our SP-350 housings. Ikelite sells various sync cords for this purpose:

The catch is that even if you could use it for our housing, you would still lose the TTL capabilities. So, if you are one of the purists that shuns TTL anyway, it's not a big deal and you can stick with manual control. Otherwise, if you think it's a technology that you will find useful, then you will need to stick with one of the Ikelite strobes.

I'm not an expert in all this, but that's my understanding from doing my research the last couple of months. For me, it was an easy decision. Since I hadn't previously invested in a strobe that I am looking to port over, I decided i might as well go Ikelite all the way.

I use the DS 125 with my sp-350 and have had great luck with it. It's amazing how long the strobe goes on a charge even with the modeling light on. I have never had the strobe run down on me. Wish I could say the same for my camara batteries but I shot first and delete later.
I'm looking forward to trying a friends 51's to see if the 2 stobes look better with balance and shadows over the large 125.
I noticed others are doing as I have in regards to stocking up on the camaras. I bought mine in January this year for 250.00 and now you can find on ebay for 150.00. Hard to beat when it ships with a 1 Gig card. I am now the proud owner of 3.

Cheers,

tsreimer, i don't mind at all cause i will be steping onto your footpath anyway soon, i hope.

Hey Guys,

I finally got all of my pictures posted from my recent Grand Cayman trip over the holiday. It was my first time using the camera, housing and strobe...so there's lots of room for improvement. Good news is that nothing flooded. :)

Here's the link:

Underwater photo's were taken with an Ikelike Housing, Olympus SP-350, and DS-125
Topside photos were taken with a Canon 5D and a 5mm 1.4 and a 100-300mm zoom.

Enjoy and be kind!

Some terrific shots, TSReimer. Nice job.

Thanks Larry! All your posts on this board (along with the other regulars) helped make my first time out using my new SP-350 pretty successful!

Cheers!

Nice pics! I have the DS-51 and it didnt get near that nice of shots. Most of that is from me not knowing enough abouit the camera and setting it up correctly, but more light and even light sure helps!

Thanks! I'm sure 100+ ft vizibility didnt hurt either! :) For all those shots posted, there were tons more that were throw-aways of course. (As well as quite a few of those posted could really be circular bin material).

I've heard lots of great things about the DS-51 too. Let me know how it goes for you, and post some shots when you can!

Here are some of my better ones with the DS-51. I like them, but I'm not in it at this point to impress anyone but myself. My last trips I didn't have a camera.
