Oh, sorry to hear about that. I do not have any suggestions for fixing it yourself. Is that the Ni-MH battery fix or is there something newer? If it is old enough to need that it is probably out of warranty, too. Really bad luck!
i had mine several time the update firmware failed while downloading but it did not ruin the camera. the fsailure occur because of the awful network connections down here in Indonesia. I am sure oly can fix it for u.

A friend of mine had a similar problem - his internet connection failed while doing the firmware update . As far as I know the only way to fix it is to send it to Olympus.
I haven't felt the need to download the firmware as I don't do AA batteries, but the few times my camera has locked up, the solution was pull out the batteries and let it sit awhile, charge them and reinstall.
If you get the camera going, try the update again. Also, I had trouble updating one of my cameras with Comcast on a Mac. I tried with a PC on another internet service and got it done.
Unfortunately, the Olympus firmware upgrade instructions warn against disconnecting or loosing connection to the camera before the upload has been completed. As I understand it, any failure to do this could require a trip to Olympus service.
THANKS for the tip........no way I'm going to risk flashing the new software........
I was going to do it to my 2 SP-350's, but as I'm leaving for 2 weeks in Fiji in 3 days, no way I'm going to chance it.
I've found with my SP-320, that if you get the low battery warning during a dive, just turn the camera off for a minute and you'll get another 5 minutes of shots before the red warning comes back.
The firmware update is only necessary if you are using AA batteries. The issue is that they provide power at a lower voltage (2.4 V vs. 3.0V+) than the CR3V batteries. The camera sees the lower voltage as a sign that the batteries are discharged.
