Hi guys,

I'm very inexperienced with batteries and am looking to build a canister for a home built can light upgrade. I'm hoping to use Li-Ion batteries, and want to know if you guys have some good sources for the cells and chargers?

Great! thanks for the help guys. I like that I can buy pre-assembled battery packs from them and just build my own canister around those packs.

The 18650 batteries are great for led lights, as 3.6v, have the leds too, which need the higher voltage anyway if you want high power light.
Also search site for "dive light" or "diving light". They have one for about $75, very bright.

Be extremely careful with the batteries. They have a very high energy density and can easily explode or burst into flames if shorted.

The battery pack requires a protection circuit to prevent overcharging which can easily cause fire or explosion, and over-discharging can damage the cells and cause fire or explosion when next recharged.

Li Ion batteries are actually pretty safe when operated within their design parameters. Just make sure you have a protection circuit for charging and discharging, as well as a charger that's designed for Li Ion batteries.

Thanks for the tip! It's reasons like that that I would prefer to purchase a pre built battery pack and not try to assemble one myself.

I'm currently resurrecting my canister light project. I found that you can get cheap LiIon model aircraft batteries that are conveniently sized. I am looking at a 5Ah, 45x44x150mm in size , 18.5V for about €50 with a €30 battery charger from Hong Kong. Good price, useful voltage (4 Cree XPGs in series with a step-down PWM dimmer).

Let me know if you guys need pre assembled packs. I buy 18650 batteries from China (the good ones, not the 2 for $5.00 ones 'cause those really suck!) and have a professional nattery builder assemble for me.
Price would be roughly $10 per battery plus $20 for assembly. This includes PCB. For a firm price, contact me.

Has anyone put together a good schematic with wiring diagram for a successful, proven light that he would be willing to share? Asking too much? Group comments could refine the design and suggest alternative materials or design. Think of it as open-source hardware design.
