A couple of buddies and I are changing our configuration and are looking for a source to buy lead (ie in small pellets or balls). Any body know where we can get some (in montreal woud be nice)?
Of course we can always buy some soft wight pouches open them but we are not looking for that

For soft pocket weight I bought some lead from a outdoor store "Le Baron". I believe any outdoor/hunting store will have that. Is lead shot and is sold in 23-25lb bags, the price I paid is 1$/1lb which is not bad.
For the fabric I suggest go to a marina and buy that blue fabric they use to cover the boats is very good and is water proof.

I second LeBaron for lead and they have a store in Mtl.

If you are looking to do some soft bags on the cheap you can use discarded PVC IV bags which come in 50,100,250, and 500 cc sizes. Cut off the port where the needle is inserted, stick in a funnel, and fill them up with the shot. Then seal off the hole with a heat sealer or take them to a shop that will do it if you only have a few to do.

You end up with the same product a the Scubapro 'Eco-weights' for about a quarter the cost or less.

When some buddies of mine decided to pour some lead channel weights, we got our lead FOR FREE by showing up to Canadian Tire's auto department and asking for cast-off wheel weights. They're small and apparently melt fast (I didn't get to witness that part of the process myself) Best of all, Canadian Tire at least usually just chucks them - it's not worth their while to re-sort the used weights. They made us show up with our own bucket and we could take all we needed.

Don't know for sure if that works in Quebec.

Great idea Freefloat. I wonder what Cdn Tire and all the other tire shops do with those lead weights normally? One would hope they get shipped back to be recycled.

Most places have a scrap dealer who picks them up, often they pay a small amount for them. They're not "pure" lead, but have other metal (antimony I is one) to make them harder/stiffer.
Exercise care when melting lead, the fumes are quite toxic and some of the additives are even more so. You'll also have to deal with the steel bits that hold them on the rim. That said, an old aluminum pressure cooker makes a great melting pot and one of those big propane burners a great heat source (we normally use the burner for cooking corn in season).

For lead shot, almost any gun shop carries them.

I picked up about 8 pounds of lead weights from a local Goodyear tire center. Some places aren't allowed to give the lead out, but just visit a few and ask.

Only thing wrong with wheel weight lead is its an alloy and is actually lighter than traditional dive lead, has more slag in it too, but for free why not.
For my channel weight I made an oversize mold from 1/2 thick plate, welded it all together then put some old weights in it and put an oxyfuel torch under it and walked away. 15 minutes later I had a perfectly smooth and formed weight and avoid breathing in any nasty fumes.
