Wear socks as Mr. Conclusion noted above. I had surgery on my feet years ago, and have a couple of toes that stick up abit as a result. If I don't wear my lycra socks, it's blister time. The added benifit is that my boots are easier to slide on and off.

Make sure before you put on your boots that they are free of any type of debree or bugs.

Your sores sound like a possible spyder or ant bite for example. Take a look around where you keep your gear at home and be aware of where you set your gear on the ground.

I had the same symtom once when I changed the size of fin with the spring strap. It is mostely occured by the wrong size of fin and odd fin kick (too strong and too many).

The neoperene socks are helpful to avoid some abrasive contact, but it doesn't eventually get rid of the problem. See you fin kick at the surface by laying back. You can see where the your toe is contacting and if the fin is a roomy when you are kicking a fin.

I too had the sore toe, foot issue with my SP twin jets 'full heel', then again after 7 months in sorels and other snow boots, my teva sandals were wearing me 'raw' in spots. Eventually after my skin lost it's tenderness (and a few dozen bandaids), things were normal, I found some 'nu-skin' works like thin layer of rubber cement on my tender spots, way to go until things toughened up. At one point I thought about maybe just switching to booties, but unless the boot fits perfectly, my experience is the same thing will happen

My wife has had the same problem with ever dive. The fins she had were real hard uppers in an open heel fin with 6mm boots. We both got new fins atomic aquatics splits(reef red and liquid blue) after trying them in bonaire and she has had no problem since. They have a softer foot pocket and fit well also the toe area is open and that helped a lot for her.

Bibendum:
...One small problem surfaced yesterday though, the second toe on my left foot is very sore to the touch, a little red on the bottom and swollen to the point that it hurts to bend it. I also have a sore red spot on the little toe on my left foot as well. ... ..!
Fin foot is common but it does not sound like that to me. Fin foot is a muscle ache from using your feet in ways you often don't or from the wrong (too big, or stiff) fins. I was going to say to look real close for a sea urchin spine in the redness, thinking you might have accidently kicked one or stepped on one and gotten a spine in there. But with the repeat performance on the following dive I doubt that is it.

Other than that, it could be poor fit. Diving in CA I am certain you have on 3-7 mm boots so impropperly fitting boots or fins or both could be a problem.

After that, I'm out. No idea.

I vote try socks as well. They help reduce the rubbing, and some people just react negatively to minor rubbing from the boots.

I had extremely sore toes after my dives in Key West. When I finally looked at them when I got home, I discovered I had ingrown toenails. I now make it a point to dig them out before a trip. Haven't had a problem since.

My son also had this problem on his cert dive. The instructor reccommened putting socks on. My son said it helped a lot, only we used the thick athletic socks. Maybe he needs a better pair of fins. Tina
