HI I'm new to this site but have been scuba diving for years. I was talking to Ocean Images in Florida (Keith) from whom I had purchased my underwater casing. I need a new HD mini camcorder compatible with a MAC and he recommended the SONY HDR-HC5 or HC7, which have the LANC input which I need.

The Sony Instruction manual for these cameras says that "The supplied software 'Picture Motion Browser' does not operate on MAC OS."

The new IMAC will operate on both OS and Windows and so it may accomodate these SONY cameras but not existing MACs with only the OS system. (which I own)

Keith had not heard of this and suggested I post this problem on ScubaBoard. Has anyone heard of this? Any ideas? Other HD mini camcorders with the LANC connection? Thanks for anything you can add. George Adams

You'll get more info posting that in our camera forum.... ;)

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Moved to the Underwater Videography forum.

The only HDV camcorders with LANC control are made by Sony. LANC has nothing to do with video capture though, it's a protocol for camera control.

All you need a NLE (Non-Linear-Editor) on your MAC to capture video via the Firewire (Sony calls it I-Link) connection. If you have I-Movie, Premiere or Final Cut (Pro), you can capture and edit video directly from the camcorder through the supplied Firewire cable.

I have a PC and didn't even install Picture Motion Browser - not even sure what it does. I just capture directly to my NLE.

I'm told by Keith at Ocean Images in Florida that the only high definition mini camcorders that will fit their underwater case are the above SONYs, because they have the LANC/remote jack input for operating the camera while in the water.

I want it for editing on a MAC and the SONY instruction book says they are not compatible with the MAC OS system.

Has anyone had this issue and do you have any thoughts? Thanks for anything you can add to this.

You're misunderstanding the concept, the Sony Picture Motion Browser s/w doesnt work with a Mac but it doesn't matter as any non-linear editor installed on your Mac (such as I-movie) should be able to capture video directly via the camera's Firewire/I-link interface. All the LANC port is for is camera control while in the housing.

All you won't be able to do is transfer stills from the camera via the Picture s/w.

see below...

I'm told my message should be posted to the camera forum. How do I locate the camera forum?

George
It really should remain here in the Underwater Videography forum.

If your question concerns capturing stills from video, you're still in the right place as many digital still photographers won't know the process since they import stills using another method.

Post any followup questions here and I'm sure someone will be glad to help you. I shoot a Sony HDR camcorder and several people here use an HDR-HC7 so we've figured this stuff out already...

For future reference, at the top of this thread just under the Scubaboard Logo there is a link to Scubaboard > Scuba Diving Central > Videography. Click on the Scubaboard link then just scroll down to the 2nd forum section and choose the Underwater Photography forum. Here's the direct link:
