The only HDV camcorders with LANC control are made by Sony. LANC has nothing to do with video capture though, it's a protocol for camera control.

All you need a NLE (Non-Linear-Editor) on your MAC to capture video via the Firewire (Sony calls it I-Link) connection. If you have I-Movie, Premiere or Final Cut (Pro), you can capture and edit video directly from the camcorder through the supplied Firewire cable.

I have a PC and didn't even install Picture Motion Browser - not even sure what it does. I just capture directly to my NLE.

I this where I reply? this is the most confusing sytem I have ever used. Anyway:

I have had this same experience with capturing video from SONY camcorders so my only questiuon is : Does what you say apply to the SONY HD cameras as well? I hear what you say and may be confusing what they say in the manual with video capture and editing, which is different, I guess.

You've got it..

OK, now I'm confused. Do you mean that you've successfully captured video to your Mac from a Sony camcorder previously? If so, the exact same process will work for HDV. If not then you may have the same problem. But I really doubt it, I know dozens of people who edit HDV on Macs and no one has mentioned capture problems.

May have to upgrade your editing s/w for HDV capture though. I'm not familiar with Mac s/w - but on the PC side some programs have SD/HDV versions - priced accordingly. :D

The Sony manual refers to their proprietary capture s/w which doesn't work on Macs.

Another point to consider is the performance of your Mac. Most PC's more than a couple years old can't capture/edit HDV since they're not fast enough. I'd guess the same is true for older Mac's.

Maybe post your hardware/software configuration here so a Mac video person can confirm it will work.

You're misunderstanding the concept, the Sony Picture Motion Browser s/w doesnt work with a Mac but it doesn't matter as any non-linear editor installed on your Mac (such as I-movie) should be able to capture video directly via the camera's Firewire/I-link interface. All the LANC port is for is camera control while in the housing.

All you won't be able to do is transfer stills from the camera via the Picture s/w.

Thnaks a lot - I think I'm squared away witt this now, thanks to you. why can't they write instruction manauls better?

One thing that may be causing confusion is that up until Imovie08, you couldn't import AVCHD files and even with it, you have to have an Intel based Mac...still won't work on PowerPC Macs. Shouldn't be a problem with miniDV recordings. Also, there were initial import issues with 08. I had never had an issue with my JVC in Imovie HD, but when I tried the new version it would quit after a few seconds. Ended up importing to HD then copying to 08 because it has a few more editing tools. Don't know if the updates have fixed the problem as I haven't tried to download anything lately.
