I have an opportunity to invest in a Sony Alpha 7 to allow me a little more latitude with photos for some upcoming projects. Most of the images needed are surface shots, but the camera will also be used for some simple underwater work (with the help of a Nauticam housing, which I checked out at BOOT Show last week).

Apart from the rather obvious challenge presented by a limited range of focal lengths in lenses to take full advantage of a full-size 35 mm sensor, do any of you have experiences or thoughts to share?

Have only tested the camera in the store. As to housings I think the reality is for WA work you are looking at having to shoot the "larger" domes, the Zen 170mm looks like it may be the best solution. Reality is it will take time to come up with a classic macro, don't know what you will see, wide angle lens line-up. A customer came in with their A7r, Canon 100mm Macro lens, and Metabones adapter and I can't say I was blown away by the autofocus, and with the Adapter on we could not figure out how to get Manual Focus to work. While I agree with the experts the cameras are ground breaking let's hope they go the Fuji route with software updates to resolve minor issues.

If you have shot other Nauticam 4/3 housings the one for the A7 is a little different. The other 4/3 allow you to grip the housing with your right hand if you like, great for warm water diving. The new EM1 and A7 are really designed to be shot with your right hand on the handle, very familiar to DSLR shooters. While smaller than the DSLR housing they do seem a littler bigger than the OMD and other 4/3 housings to date. For those looking for "travel kit" we are creeping back up to cropped sensor DSLR size.

Very interesting comments mjh. I agree on handle issue. I really like to hold the housing on the RHS for my NEX7
