My wife and I are thinking about going diving tomorrow along the coast. It looks like we will have a bit of a NW swell. Does anybody have any recommendations? We we're thinkng maybe the North Cove of Fort Ross.

Ft. Ross is probably your best bet, calmest, although I'll bet vis will be bad. This time of year is tough. I've gotten some winter diving done in Mendocino area in the past. Russian Gulch is well protected, so is Van Damme, but the best diving there is offshore. Let us know how it is, I was thinking of going up New Years Day.
Renpirate, good to see a fellow Santa Rosan on the board!

Hi Dale,
We decided not to go today after reports from Salt Point. O vis with 14ft sweels and 25kt winds. Not exactly pleasent diving conditions. We have had some bad luck with diving conditions in the last couple of trips. My wife and I checked out your website and were thinking about hooking up with your group on one of your local dives. You are associated with Bamboo Reef in Rohnert Park right?

Andy,
We'd love to have you guys dive with us anytime. Yeah, I'm loosly affiliated with Bamboo Reef, I'm an independent instructor, but have a good working relationship with Tom Stone. I usually send my students there, he always treats them good. I'm going to Monterey next month to do a Rescue class, you guys can join us for some fun dives if you'd like.
Bummer about conditions, another storm coming in. I might just go out and watch the big water roll in!

Dale,
What are the dates of the trip to monterey? We're already rescue certified through NAUI, but it would be cool to see how another instructor teaches. I plan to take at least one course from each organization just to pick up all the little tips and tricks that each one has developed. Where will you be diving, the break water?
Do you do a lot of winter dives around here?

Planning on the 24th & 25th. Yeah, probably Breakwater, easiest spot for training, although I'll take a look at Macabee Beach too. Around here, it is very hit & miss in the winter. I've done some really good diving at Salt Pt. in Jan before, flat w/30' vis one time. Sometimes there can be some long lulls between storms. I'm going to check out Mendocino area, there are some fairly protected coves up there that should work during winter. Its a little closer than Monterey.

Mendocino has several nice places. We checked out Anchor Bay today, but it seems to take the NW swell pretty hard. When we got there the surfers were admiring the waves, so we hit our alternative; the Fort Ross Cove. It was a nice dive, but vis was only about 8ft. I can't wait for abalone season. There were nice 8-9 inch abalone in about 20ft of water.

It looks like we are going to pass on the 24-25th trip. Let us know if you have other ones planned or if you are interested in company for some Mendocino dives.

Hello All,
Any dive reports out there? I recently moved to American Canyon, Napa County so the Northern sites are a little bit closer now..
FYI...You might want to check out the Marin Scuba Club. They are having the "Sping 2004 Dive and Dine" this weekend at Van Damme state park. I'm not sure how many people are coming, but I'm sure it's going to be a good group. We're all camping together Friday and Saturday nights in the park, diving during the day. The goal is for as many people as possible to get their limit of Abalone to use for the big banquet Saturday night. That's a pot-luck affair, though I think the Abalone cooking is going to be a group effort. If you're interested, call Rolf at 510-521-8849 for more info. Or, you could just show up and see what you think of the group! I'll be the one out there on the bottom...
