Does anyone have any experience going solo on a live aboard? I was thinking about going on a Nekton trip to cay sal and my wife dive but is not that into the idea of a liveaboard. Any info or experiences would be appreciated.

I went on Blackbeards without knowing anyone. Had a blast. My insta-buddy was awesome. Most of the singles on the cruise really bonded and had a blast just hanging out when we weren't diving. Hope you have a great time. My b/f does is certified but has mal de mer and does not want to go on a boat for a week. Have a great time whatever you decide to do!

jivebaby,
when you solo on a liveaboard you run a good chance of not having to share a room.
this does not apply to blackbeards or any other liveaboard with similiar layout.

If you can't buddy up with another diver, a crew member will always splash with you. The Cay Sal trip is great!

I went solo on the Belize Aggressor. Wound up with an insta-roomate/buddy. Had a wonderful time.

Just returned from my second Nekton Diving Cruise. There was only one couple on the boat of 15 divers. I am a single diver and never have problems finding a buddy. Once you get on the boat you will all become one diving family. The crew will dive with you as a DM is always assigned to buddy on each dive if required. Remember the crew loves diving too and it gets them out of real work.

A Nekton Cay Sal Banks trip is next on my list!

Go for it. You will love the week being among felllow divers. I am a solo (not single) female 53 yr old with only one year certified and only 57 dives, and did two trips last year. Each time I found both the crew and my dive mates friendly and open. I have kept in touch via email and phone with several from my second trip. We are planning another trip together for 2008. And one couple I met will be traveling with us on a land trip this May, then visiting us (my husband and I) for a few days next Sept.

I would not suggest bringing a non-diving spouse (like my husband) on a liveaboard trip. When they say "eat, sleep, dive" they left out "and talk about diving" which is what the conversations are about all the time you aren't eating, sleeping or diving.

Go it alone, but you won't be alone for long after the first hour on board.

I agree, definitely go for it. On our Nekton trip there were 2 solos who were paired up as dive buddies, but both felt free to dive with a DM instead if they wanted. What we found happened was that although we got on the boat as couples, during meals and SI's, we all just became a bunch of divers. Everyone hung out and talked story, got info from eachother about trips, experiences, etc. Our singles were never isolated, except at night when they went to their own cabins! ;)
