Who solo dives, and who doesn't... and why for each?

I do ... sometimes ... because I want to.

Is there really any other valid reason to do so?

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Good question Bob... I don't at the quarry I dive at frequently due to rules and regs but I have in a nearby lake.

I'll play.

I don't solo dive. To me, its more fun to dive with someone and its safer. 2nd brain, extra pair of hands, and someone to help should something happen to me.

However, I don't think solo kills. That said, a lot of divers have died alone, and I wonder if having a person with them could have helped. Its just not worth it to dive alone, as far as I'm concerned.

Thumbs Up (in the SCUBA sense).

Going a little further: I agree with what PfcAJ said. I treat diving as a social activity. However, if I were on vacation (wife doesn't dive anymore), I would probably prefer diving alone to an insta[-]liability[/-]buddy.

I took Solo Diver because my buddy doesn't approach 'buddying' the same way I do. I wanted to be prepared in case he wasn't that one breath away.

However, since I had the insta-buddy from hell recently, I am d***ed glad I dived with the pony and such as if I were solo. Having a buddy is nice, but if the buddy isn't a good one, I am glad I am prepared to dive solo.

My personal solo rules are: Usually no deeper that 30 feet, so CESA is doable. Benign areas with little/no current. Preferably sites I am familiar with. Other than my one regular buddy, I am far enough from most other divers that coordination can be tricky. On trips with time limits (and of course weather limits), hooking up with someone local when it is convenient for both of us can be a pain.

When I am instructing, I consider myself a solo diver. There have been times when I have dove with another whom was an unsafe diver I was trying to help out to make safer, I also conside those to be solo dives. Sometimes I solo dive because I need the solitude for a while. Solo diving or diving with a buddy doesn't bother me as I feel to be the best buddy & most competent diver I can be, I must be as comfortable diving solo as with another diver. For me, for the mos part, solo diving is another tool for me to use.

solo diving gives me a chance to spend time with all my friends..:D
