very interesting and informative article, thaks for posting this as i didnt see it yet, i feel two different ways on it all, one the training for an intended solo diver my be good, but is the desiding factor just the agencies finding another way to make a buck off of all of us, are they suddenly going to TRY to require us to have a c-card to solo??

IMO this is an area that the agency's should stay out of. Suddenly there will be a push to be a solo diver card holder, and they will be there with their hand out for the money. Diving allready has enough c-cards to last a lifetime, and people who are card collectors to match.

i agree! now every one that has more that 15-20 dives willl be a "SOLO" certified diver by "acme dive agency". just what we need , alot more "certified, trained, experieced, divers", diving, and dieing all by themselves. this will really benifit the cause of the few of us that actually know what they are doing. it will be even harder for us to be able dive solo, without being looked apon as some kind of rebel aginst society. i personally believe that there should be a minimun number of dives be for any one ahould even think about diving solo. i feel the same way about divemasters and instructors. i'm sorry if i upset or piss off you guys but....... i just feel that it's hard to take and instructor or divemaster seriously if they have 50-100 total dives under their belt. in total honesty and realality are they experienced divers, no, gaining experience, yes. diving solo is something that you just have to take serious. not something you do just because don't want to dive with a stroke or you do it just because "it's cool"

This was a 2001 article...
Page 3
"You and I are talking in January 2001. When do you expect the new certification to be available?"

Shortly after that article came out (in fact I am not sure that Brett Gilliam didn't have something to do with it) SDI introduced the SOLO diver cert. The prerequisite for that course is a minimum of 100 dives. It states in the course it is not to be taken lightly and the equipment requirements are pretty standard tech stuff.
Having a solo diving program will not hurt solo divers who are already doing it. Having a legally defensable, insurable solo diver certificate will legitimize this very popular form of scuba diving and make it more acceptable for commercial operations to allow us to persue our pleasure of solitude.

wow...loved the article. I like this ghetto saying I hear sometimes "Don't hate the player, hate the game"

there are some good points made here and a lot remains to be seen, i do photography and so thus i solo dive a lot also, i just am very unswayed as to witch way it all will go for or against us already solo diving, as some places DONT let you solo if they catch you, such as one of the beaches in so cal, dont remember witch one it was but if caught i think there was a substancile fine!! it will be interesting to see the outcome
