HI All,
Planning my next dive trip
How do the socorros compare to diving wolf or darwin or the coccos islands ?
I was very unimpressed with my diving iin Belize, Honduras and Cozumel last year. Is Socorro diving way better than them and comparable to cocos etc ? I have done most of my diving in Asia and the highlights of my diving have been Rangiroa / Fakarava, Wolf / Darwin and Palau. I am into the big stuff and love palegic action.
Hope you can help me,
Many thanks

I have been to Galapagos and Socorro and will be to Cocos Island very soon. With my limited experience I would say Socorro offers more variety of pelagic actions. I snorkeled with Humpback whales, saw dolphins, manta rays, lots of silvertips, schools of small tuna fish and a few hammerheads in my few days of diving at Socorro. Diving at Isla Socorro (Socorro Islands consist of Socorro, Roca Partida and San Benedicto) can be boring and we were lucky to have seen Dolphins there. If you are for sharks then I really think Galapagos is better. Galapagos is almost all about sharks, Silkies, Galapagos Sharks, hammerheads, whale sharks and we saw a tiger shark as well, shark actions are more intense.
Socorro is easier diving, warmer water and the visibility was much better than in Galapagos. I enjoyed my diving in Socorro more than in Galapagos.

Thanks dude. I am into big palegic action. What time of year did you do the humpback whale snorkel ? Thanks

No problem. I went diving in Socorro in February of last year. There were lots of humpback whales at all the three islands and finally we snorkeled with them at Roca Partida. You can take a look at my video for what I have seen during the trip.

Yes, Socorro is similar to Cocos & Galapagos, hence the nickname Mexican Galapagos.

If you like adventure, then you will love Socorro.

Never did the Galapogos trip but I have been to Socorro and Cocos. Both are excellent pelagic sites. I think you will likely see more variety in Socorro plus its a bit cheaper. Last time I looked the Sea Hunter was running 5-6,000 for a ten day trip (seven days diving) and the Solmar was $3,500 more or less though you got more dives in on the Cocos trip.

Nice video. What were the diving conditions in February ? Water temps, rough seas ?
Thanks. The transfer from Cabo San Lucas was a bit rough but weather was good and sea was calm at Socorros.
Water Temperature was 23-25 degree Celsius, not much current underwater, maybe that's the reason for not too many shark actions.

I think the diving in Socorros is very different from in Galapagos. Do not expect to have the same level of shark actions as in Galapagos.

I've been to all three, Socorros twice. I'd disagree about shark action..I'd say you have the same or better in Socorros, plus throw in the manta and dolphin encounters that you won't get in either Cocos or Galapagos. At half the price and being much easier to get to, I consider the Socorros the superior option.

In my 3 days of diving at Darwin and Wolf, I think I have seen at least a thousand of sharks(mostly hammerheads and Galapagos sharks), do you mean you have seen even more sharks at Socorro? Can you please tell me what period of time did you visit Socorro? If that's true then I really should consider a trip back again :D
