Anamicha, hope you realize that I wasn't putting you down, just having fun. I can understand that the chance to explore new ground and go where few can or have, is worth some risk for sure. Few of us though would enjoy having to dive under the watchful (hopefully?) eyes of heavily armed guards. Sort of diminishes the relaxing effects of great diving for me, but I can see the excitement factor for some! Especially if the diving is really spectacular.

When I was (a lot) younger I hopped a train into Tito's Jugoslavia w/o a visa, and had a ball exploring a place that not many Americans went to then, as it was Communist and pretty primative by US standards. Being escorted to interviews under AK47's before they granted me entry, made me feel a bit vulnerable, but hey, I was young and feeling pretty invincable, so I can definately relate to assuming some risk to go where few others do.

Enjoyed your post! Maybe some day I'll get there too....

I like to combine my diving with adventure travel which has led me to the following exotic locations:
Sipidan, Malaysia (Abdulla's just befor the kidnappings, Top 5 awsome diving)
Koa Tao, Thailand (King Kong Divers, this area is known for vicious Trigger Fish, cool island)
Savu Savu, Taveuni and Nanua-i-ra, Fiji (Island hopping Cousteau's boat out of Savu Savu bonus)
Negril, Jamaica (Sundivers, Ya Mon)
Kona, Hawaii (Big Island skied the day before)
Quadra Island, British Columbia (Abysal, Wow now for something compleatly different)
Lakes Michigan, Huron and Ontario, Great Lakes (Kinda green and murkey but worth it)
St. Lawrence River (Not so green and murkey, warmer too, sweet)
Nassau, Freeport, Bimini, Bahamas (Blackbeards arrrrrr.)
Cay Caulker, Belise (Frenchie's, Epic diving with White Tips)
Utila, Honduras (Crazy Town AOW)
Boyton Beach and all the Keys, Florida (Rent a car dive em all)
Little Cayman, Cayman Islands (Bloody Bay Wall fantastic)
Cozumel, Yucatan Cenotes and Xcalac, Mexico (Viva Mexico)
Blue Hole and Perch Lake, New Mexico (Home waters)
Marsa Alam, Egypt (Red Sea )
Similans, Thailand (Off Season only divers out there)
Nha Trang, Vietnam (Rainbow divers, best dive boat ride)
Catalina Island, California (Kelp realm, far out)
Roatan, Honduras (French Harbor and West End, not bad)

It would not be accurate to characterize Sri Lanka as one big war zone. The LTTE is active in the north and east, but it is relatively safe to travel in the rest of the country. I have dived in the Hikkaduwa area and never felt in danger--well, the barb-wired, sand-bagged checkpoints around Columbo were a little unnerving. The diving down there was mediocre at best, but I enjoyed my trip--it is a beautiful country in places. I'm not sure where Nilaveli is--and I can't find it on the map--but I think the better diving is in the dodgier areas.

Lake Champlain
Mexico - PDC
Mexico - COZ
Caracoa
Belize
on our way to Raotan mid Oct.

Hands down the best dive I have ever done was yesterday afternoon in crap visability on a terrible reef in a ripping current. I was struggling with my DS and my weighting which was way off but none of that mattered on this dive. I was brought to a memorial for a diver that brought so much to this sport in this area. The memorail was placed by some very good friends of his. You can count on one hand the number of divers that know it exists or where it is. I was blessed with this dive. When we found it I was moved beyond words.
