hey, you must work for the state =P

not bad for my old memory, though. i did think
of Columbus Day, but we never get that off.
it is a bank holiday, so i should have counted it.

I think the card companies came up with all these weird or unusual holidays. International womens day?!?! What about Sweetest Day? It's just another excuse for them to sucker people into buying more cards! Just my opinion.

While you are right about a lot of them it's not the case this time, Mandy. International Women's Day has never really caught on in the capitalist countries. It was very big behind the iron curtain, especially the USSR. OTOH, they didn't celebrate Mother's Day. The card companies would probably love to run with this one, but I haven't seen an attempt by them so far.

What is Sweetest Day?

Walter:
Not the state.
I do, and we have an additional, very important holiday: spring break! Whoo-hooo! Except this year some of us have to work that day... :frown2:

You are right and wrong at the same time. International Women's Day in fact was big in the communistic countries. But we also celebrated and still do Mother's Day.

I myself hate International Women's Day - as not being radically feministic I still think this is the most antyfiministic day. But some history of this day is worth knowing.

Women’s Day started in ancient Rome where on the 1st March they celebrated maternity and fertility. During this day Romans were giving small gifts to theirs wifes. In 1857 women employees of New York cotton factory organized a strike for a shorter working hours and equal to men salaries. In the US first Women’s Day was celebrated on 20th Feb 1909.
The International Women’s Day was announced by the International Congress of Socialistic Women in 1910. A year later it was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
In Russia Women’s Day is connected with 8th March 1917 when women’s strikes in Sankt Petersburg were suppressed and there casualties. So the Women’s day on 8th March is for remebrance of those casualties.
16th Dec 1977 the United Nations appealed to all states to organize and to celebrate the International Women’s Day.

What is that Pete? The day we take off work to play on Scubaboard...wait a minute, seeing that the board seems most active during working hours
(and of course I NEVER surf over here while at work LOL)......hmmmm... I guess SB Day is M-F 9-5 :D

... the fact that none of us use "extended" break time at work to shoot the breeze with people from other states that LIKE to talk about diving? :54:

BTW, when *are* working hours again? Excuse me, I have to go diving.

Mania,

My ex wife tells me they didn't have Mother's Day in the Soviet Union. Personally, I never lived there, but she spent the first 30 years of her life in the USSR. Maybe things in Poland and the USSR were different?
