I did a shore dive saturday morning with some formidable conditions, surge, and swell being the two most present conditions.

It's a long swim back if something goes wrong, especially if you're towing an unconscious buddy :(
 
nothing better than surge, swell, strong currents and poor viz to make you a better diver. And doing it in 15 feet of water 300 feet from shore is the perfect practice!
