You have to keep about 70% of your wieght on the front leg and it takes a while to get used to pivoting on the front while bringing the rear leg around to get the right angle to stop or perform slow turns.

While going slow you can swing your arms to help rotate and when able to go faster the angle or amount of pivot required is much less.

I remember my hips getting so sore, using the muscles in a way I had not previously...

I felt having both attached to one board was preferable to two (skiing) I could not ski the first time I tried but could snowboard, I don't know if this is different from person to person. I was having fun the first day out and that is what caused me to stick with the sport.
