I do also suggest you continue to practice as this sounds mostly mental to me. If you assume it's only the regulator and not you in any small way, you may one day sneak up on yourself and have a problem.
Gear absolutely effects ones confidence however your skills should be so practiced that the gear you use has zero bearing on how you dive. Theoretically, with practice, one should be able to breathe from a heavily free flowing regulator as calmly as one does from a new regulator that works perfectly.
