I remember reading about an incident at Catalina Island (California) when I first found SB where the instructor, who had 1 1 /2 years of experience, was on a certification dive for Master Scuba Diver student when everything went South. 2 years may be giving them too much credit.
 
I always have one, be it a roll up one clipped to me when I am diving what I expect to be a benign dive (warm water, calm conditions) because conditions change and accidents happen. In cold water I usually have the full version, because conditions change and accidents happen.
