We were there in February and stayed at the Iberostar Toucan which is just on the south edge of Playa del Carmen in Playacar. Playacar is a gated community of private homes, resorts, and a gold course -- very, very nice. Iberostar Toucan is the last resort on the beach, so you have a big expanse of wide open deserted beach just south of you -- perfect! We will definitely go back.Is it any good? We were thinking about staying at the Iberostar Paraiso Beach Resort. Any suggestions on where to go instead?
Thanks.
We took the collectivo and got dropped off at Akumal with no problems. It's the cheapest way to go. We walked in and followed the road all the way back... go past Akumal and all the tourist stuff... the road curves to the left - keep walking and you come up to this little bar / restaurant on your right. Can't remember the name of it, but it was awesome -- swings at the bar, crows nest, right on the beach. They also have beach chairs and a little pool. The snorkeling from the beach right in front of the bar was awesome. There is a little dive shop there that will rent you equipment if you need it - but we had our own and they didn't charge us a dime to use their beach. We did eat lunch there -- fish tacos were awesome.
I have some great pictures... but I can't figure out how to put them here!
