Only reason for a snorkel is a long surface swim. I never wear a snorkel, heck, on most trips, I don't even have one in my gear back. All surface swims I have done so far were manageable by swimming on my back. Last time I wore a snorkel was on a deep wreck, with current ripping so hard on my snorkel that i ended up taking it off right then and there because it tugged on my mask so hard it started leaking. And since then, snorkels are history. :)
 
Thanks to everyone for the input. After much thought and some more experience, I will be purchasing a snorkel and adjusting to having it with me. There were a couple of times that I would have used one, if I had one, on our recent dives in the Caymans and Cozumel.
