Snorkel: is cheap OK? ...in the way.. keep in pocket? Gearkeeper?

I don't use one.

It is going to do nothing but get in the way or give me a belly full of saltwater when I dive at home. The wave height is such that it isn't going to help me on a surface swim.

I keep one in my dive bag when I am in calmer seas in the event that something cool is going on near the surface.

In calmer waters, few seasoned divers ever use, or even carry. If you must, bungee to leg calf, tubing best, two bands.
Cheap, and simple, absolutely ok.
I keep one in dive bag, in case I go snorkeling.
