Hi -

I was setting up the snap swivels on our gear last night and looking at example photos to get an idea for the location on the hose, relative to the reg/SPG, that the cave line is tied to.
For the regulator on long hose, most photos show that the snap is tied off to the hose itself at varying distances from the attachment hardware. I guess you place it where is comfortable and you don't get bumped by the snap swivel in the face while diving. Is there any issue with tying the knot on the metal connector itself? Because of the various parts and grooves in it, I imagine that it would hold it in place a lot better than on a bare hose (I suppose the cave line could potentially slide on the hose when it gets wet??). Same for SPG, I was thinking of tying the snap on the metal, right below the swivel.
I haven't taken this in the water yet and will probably experiment with different positions of the snap swivel to see what's most comfortable and intuitive to use. I'm just curious what others are doing.

Best,
elgoog

I prefer to tie off the bolt snaps where it doesn't interfere with my hand while grasping the long hose to donate. So, about a hand width from the reg.

on the SPG, it's placed so I can wrap my two fingers around the hose and operate the bolt snap with my thumb and index finger.

this feels the most natural and with repetition becomes simple muscle memory.

caveline line on the bare hose is where you want it, not on the metal parts.

deco, depends on the hose. Apeks actually has a custom hose fitting that is designed for zip ties or cave line to be tied in.

elgoog, typically they are tied right below the crimp fitting.

I don't agree with the DIR philosophy of SPG on the left hip, but if you put it down there it is a little critical if you are tall on how far up it goes, so sometimes the farther down the better. On the SPG itself, there is usually a notch right above the wrench fitting which is where I tie my bolt snaps too. This is usually where the DIR crowd will tie the SPG's back to the first stage for deco/stage bottles, but there is no harm in tying the bolt snap there, but it is typically done on the hose itself about half an inch from the crimped fitting

This is what I actually do with mine when I'm diving backmount, but that is definitely against DIR.

yea you don't want it there because it clutters the chest and interferes with stages. That left d ring becomes very crowded

also seems like it could work your inflator hose off the inflator

I don't think there is any DIR prescription about where the boltsnap is tied on the SPG. I have mine on the metal. It works fine, and no one has ever commented upon it.

On the long hose, putting the boltsnap on the metal means it hangs against your chin, which is not pleasant. As decompression says, a hand's width away from the regulator seems to work quite well. If you tie it tight enough, it doesn't slide.

Tie it in such a way so that your SPG doesn't hang below your body. I have mine tied on so that the line sits in the little groove where it swivels (no I have not had an issue with it abrading or fraying at all).

Long hose is tied either on the swage or just past it on the hose if the line tends to slip off the swage, depends on the hose. In either case, tie it TIGHT.

Dangling SPGs, long hose regs and long bungeed backups grind my DIR gears.

YMMV on this. i've had the cave line get sliced tied in this position two times. it will likely depend on your particular hardware and how sharp it is

Not if its pink.....

One hand width was further out on the hose than I was thinking but after watching a video of long hose donation, it makes perfect sense. I'm going to start with this and work from there.

This looks mostly like the instructions on the DGX site (which I've been following) with a couple of differences. Actually, I found it clearer and easier to follow.

Could you clarify on "it is a little critical if you are tall on how far up it goes"? By "how far up", it sounds like you mean how far up on the hose .i.e. farther away from the crimp? Is the concern here that the snap just won't reach the left hip D-ring if it's too far up?

Between wifebuddy and I, we have a 24" and 26" hose for the SPG and are going to see which one fits/works for us best.

Thanks for the info so far,
elgoog
