Really shocked me to see this thread--was just talking to a Nanaimo friend last night about coming back up to dive. Nanaimo's Daily News has published this today, byline Danielle Bell:

An American diver is dead after an accident off of Snake Island near Nanaimo on Saturday. The Victoria Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre received a report of a dive accident around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Nanaimo RCMP also attended. Ed Singer, who runs Sundown Diving in Nanaimo, said on Sunday that he was there when the dive accident happened.

"A Seattle man died Saturday in a diving accident near Snake Island. He came up to the surface and he was in a little distress," said Singer. "We still don't know (what happened)." The diver was unconscious shortly after being pulled from the water. Singer said the diver, a man from the Seattle area and believed to be in his 70s, was not new to the sport.

The diver was a part of an unnamed local charter company, diving the HMCS Saskatchewan artificial reef. Singer was chartering a group of 10 divers alongside a separate local charter company that he would not name. The other American divers the man was with have since headed home although they were scheduled to dive on Sunday.
