My husband and I are camping at Fayette State Park in the Upper Peninsula next weekend. The State Park guide says there is scuba diving in the adjacent Snail Shell Harbor. I spoke with the dive shop in Escanaba (Blue Water Divers) and they confirmed. I was told it is a shallow but nice dive. Has anyone been up there?

Thanks all.

I was up there last summer, we dove the E.R. Williams out near St. Marteen Island (sp) I didn't do any shore diving though. The group I was with did a shore dive, I'll see where they dove at, I think it was near the park.

thanks Mike, any info would be great...

I talked to one of the guys I was up at Fayette with, and they dove a place called "Slag Beach" I don't know if it is accessible by beach, because they used one of the zodiacs we took up there. Also you may want to see about getting a permit to dive the harbor right at Fayette (this is called Snail Shell Harbor), maybe check with one of the park rangers, at a campground. Also speaking of campgrounds if this is how you're staying Fayette is a primative camping, while Indian Lake has a shower and restrooms, Indian Lake is at least 10 miles from Fayette Park.

Also "The Big Spring" is pretty interesting.

Mike, thanks for everything. We ended up diving Slag Beach. It was accessible to the park. We really didn't see anything. Just went about 200 yards out, only made it to about 35 feet with about 15 feet of vis and looked at a bunch of sand darters. The only remotely big fish I saw was later on when I was snorkeling the beach by myself. A big perch. Not incredibly exciting. But we got wet. Snail Shell Harbor, unfortunately, you really need a boat to dive. If not a boat, one would have to haul all of one's gear maybe half a mile to get to the harbor. Ugh. We had already paid for our permit to dive the harbor before we found out the logistics, or lack thereof. We did camp at Fayette. We have a travel trailer, so all we needed was electricity, which Fayette has. My husband is a big history buff, so the ghost town element of Fayette was a driving force to our trip. We did meet a really nice guy through Blue Water Divers in Escanaba, where we got our air. His name is Rick Malone and we plan on going back and diving with him another trip. We did go to the Big Spring as well. Terribly cool. Thanks again for your help. Kathalina

Your welcome, Fayette is quite interesting it's self. To bad about diving the harbor :( well at least like you said you got wet, the two I went with saw a few artifacts on he bottom while at slag beach.
