I recently quit smoking after a pack and a half a day for 15 years. Unless you have ever been addicted to cigaretts it's difficult to understand why anyone who dives would smoke. During those 15 years of smoking I played competative organized sports. I played in 2 soccer leagues and 2 hockey leagues per year. Plus I am an avid skier , Mt biker , rollerblader ect... If there is a sport to play....I'll play it. You would think someone that active would never smoke...or continue to for so long. I didn't make sense to me either, it's just that addictive. It's been about 8 months or so since my last cigarette and I don't miss it a bit. ( well maybe once in a while ) I've certainly noticed an improvement in my breathing and lung capacity. Diving was one of the motivating factors in helping me to quit. Now that I'm a non-smoker...I really want to get into some free diving. I'm amazed at the depths that some people can free dive to. I can do about 35 ft.... wonder how deep I could have done before quiting.

To anyone out there thinking of joining the ranks of the non-smoking.....I have one word for you....ZYBAN

Congratulations. I still smoke like you did and I am just as active. I would like to quit but just cant imagine life without them. How did you do it...exactly? Again, CONGRATULATIONS.
:cheer:

I smoked up to three packs a day for about eighteen years. I had my last cigarette on June 4, 1987 (quit with the help of hypnosis), started diving in June of 2001.

Thanks diveaustin
Believe it or not it was pretty easy. First thing is that you have to WANT to quit. I had gotten to a point in my life where I was sick and tired of coughing up crap in the morning, smelling like an ashtray, spending $10 a day, yadda yadda yadda.....
At the same time I admit that I truely ENJOYED smoking. More than anything else....I knew I had to stop and that if I didn't it was going to kill me. So, thanks to a friend of mine, I started taking Zyban. After about 3 weeks ..... no more smoking. Actually I stoped smoking after about the first week.....the urge liteally disappeared! I still would have my psychological urges from time to time ( after a meal , with my morning coffee ) but they were fairly weak urges and were gone in a couple of weeks.
I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to quit. Good luck!

I quit 3 days before my OW classes started. It has been 6 months now without a single puff.

Diving is my motivation to stay smoke free....

My brother also used Zyban and had good luck with it. I tried it and it made me feel psychotic. I figured it wasn't going to work for me :(

I have never smoked. Believe it or not, as a child I was allergic to cirgertte smoke; it made my lungs itch inside. I lived in a house of smokers (mother, father aka Poppy, both my brother) and because of this they were very considerate of me. Had to be. Doctors and time took care of the allergy but I have had problems with pressure in my lungs from being around a smoker. I lost one of the dearest people in my entire life to a heart condition attributed to affects of smoking. Not lungs, heart. My dearest Poppy died on January 10th 1997. I have encouraged SeaJay with stopping the habit but it really took his determination and mind set. After telling me he could stop anytime he wanted and realizing that's not the case after a failed attempt last year, it took a lot of effort. The distraction of changing his diet at the same time helped him I think. However, remember those closest to you pay dearly when you smoke and stop. I can't tell you how ugly it has gotten at times. And to be honest, sometimes it is difficult to continue the unconditional support while wading waist deep in BS and verbal yuck, bad attitude and well, I think you get the picture. I praise and encourage all those who quit and are quitting. It is much better to enjoy the company of someone who does not taste or smell like an ashtray.
