Does anyone have any experience with Smith Mt. Lake near Roanoke? I have been diving out of VA Beach but looking for something closer to home when I get back over there? I heard there is an old town down there, and maybe other relics to dangerous to mention.

I grew up about a half hour from SML. What you heard was true. Before the lake was made, a lot of the land was "partially" cleared. There are a lot of trees, old homes, and other obstacles on the bottom. I can't imagine the lake would be a good dive, visibility would be very poor. Some sections of the lake are as deep as 300-400ft (especially around the dam).
