A soft, but rigid material could be abraded with use and a too thin Al could be bent

Steel will abrade and bend, however it can be rebent and it takes decades to wear out. I have a number of good spare buckles because the jacket or weight belt wore out around them. An aluminum buckle of the same strength will probably weigh more and need a steel hinge pin to last as long. A good plastic buckle will work but wear out sooner than steel and may shatter if abused. I don't necessarily switch out plastic immediately, but carry a spare steel buckle in my save a dive kit.
