Lonely Boy,

We have made 3 trips to Sipadan Island.

- Aug '94
- Nov '00
- Nov '01

Each time we have stayed at Borneo Divers Resort right in front of the Drop Off.

We enjoyed all of our trips although I must say the coral at the Drop Off was in much better shape in '94 before the large sandy beach in front of Borneo Divers was washed over the Drop Off.

I enjoyed looking at your pictures.

Take care,
Rickg

I had a great scuba holiday on Sipadan and Kapalai in March 2001, one year after the hostage situation. On Kapalai we had 2 police and 10 soldiers to guard the resort - and we were only 2 guests.

You'll find a webalbum and some video-clips on my website www.world-discoverer.com and there's much more to come

I was lucky to film sharks on several dives and big schools of barracuda and jacks.

We stayed with Pulau Sipadan Resort & Tours on both locations - and everything was just great.

Regards,
Gisle, Norway :)

:) Thank you Dee. My first time on this website yesterday. I like what I see. Did you check out the videoclip with the school of barracudas?

Gisle,

Welcome onboard Scuba Board and for the link to your pic's. I especially liked the closeup on the pufferfish on pg 3.

Rickg

Thanks Rickg :)

I see you stayed with Borneo Divers on Sipadan three times. Were there much difference from 1994 to 2001?

Borneo Diver's pier was a great place to hang around in the evenings. Their divemasters made a good show playing guitar etc.

I'm going back one day ...

Gisle,

I see from another of your pictures that you met Elger, Borneo Diver's singing DM, and resident Romeo (in his mind at least) while you were there. You are right that the Drop Off Cafe at the end of Borneo Diver's pier is a good place to hang out at night. The only problem was it was easy to drink a "bit" more than I intended on several of the nights when there where lots of people there and I missed a before breakfast dive on several occasions because I couldn't drag my lazy butt out of bed :)

I noticed several changes on the island from '94 to '00. They are:

- '94 there were only 3 resorts on the island. Borneo Divers and the resorts immediately to the right and left of Borneo Divers.
- in while walking around the island in '94 the beach was pretty clean for the most part. Now you see lots of trash, abandoned boats, etc
- there used to be a much wider beach in front of and off to the right of (towards Barracuda Point) of Borneo Divers. In fact we used to be able to play beach volleyball on the beach between Borneo Divers and the Drop Off. The last time we were there in '01, so much of the beach had eroded away that several times at high tide they would bring the boat right up to the steps of the dive locker and we were able to step right into the dive locker. Unfortunately it seems that most of the eroded sand ended up going over the edge of the Drop Off and covering the coral there so the Drop Off isn't near as pretty as it was in '94.

All of that said, we have enjoyed all of our trips to Sipadan and we also plan on returning. While the island itself is not as nice as it used to be (due to the increased # of resorts and people) the diving and the Borneo Diver staff remain super.

Maybe we'll run across you there one of these days.

Hi again Rickg

Thank you for reminding me of Elger's name. I'll add it to the image text under the photo.

I guess I skipped a few early morning dives myself due to some social and wet evenings at The Drop Off Cafe - but I didn't skip the night dives before going there.

I guess you had some great nightdives with all the humphead parrotfish at the shelves down the drop off yourself?

Did you ever go to Kapalai? It's definitely worth the trip.

It would be fun to run into each others one day, and with my plans for the coming years the chances are good. As you can see from my website on www.world-discoverer.com I'm going sailing and scuba diving around the World for some years - inn all the best locations for doing just that

Regards,
Gisle
