According to a regional Malaysian newspaper, the Daily Express, a Sabah Parks official told a conservation symposium in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on 30 January 2008 that the recovery process of the damaged coral reef at Pulau Sipadan following the 2006 barge incident is now almost complete.

The report quoted Sabah Parks Deputy Director Dr Jamili Nais who made the remarks to reporters at the Semporna Islands Darwin Project (SIDP) Symposium.

If this is true, it will be the fastest recovery of damaged coral in the world. Could it be true that a patch the size of two football fields sliced clean, could regenerate in three years whereas global coral studies show corals grow by a fraction of an inch each year under the most promising of circumstances?
