Hi guy's, I'm in a bit of a quandary about my wing lift needs. The one time I used a bp/w it was a 40lbs pioneer, SS bp and I wore 14lbs on the belt. It was awesome!

When I go into LDS, the guy (36yrs instr) looks at me cross eyed at the thought of 30lbs wing. He says it would not be enough in some situations, rescue, whatever.

When I use the wing calculator it says I only need 17 lbs lift and 7 lbs lead! Crazy. I would like to give the 7 lbs of lead a try.

I noticed that the Scubapro Knighthawk has 45 lbs of lift.

Only going to buy one wing at this point, so what do you think, 30 or 45 ?

I do a little spear fishing and a little picture taking, that’s about it. Maybe some bug hunting soon!

Assuming you were properly weighted, If I knew what cylinder you were using when you were using a "SS bp and I wore 14lbs on the belt." I could make a recommendation.

If you had a al 80 then your total ballast was about 18 lbs, if it was a typical steel tank then your total ballast was about 24 lbs.

There are very few applications that require a wing of greater than 30 lbs.

Have your LDS explain exactly how a he calculates required wing lift. If he can't do the math seek help elsewhere.

What size wetsuit do you use, and how thick is it? While I have a friend who needs a slightly larger wing than 40lb, he's a big big dude and requires a lot of neoprene. The *vast* majority of people diving 7mm suits in California need less than 30lb lift, it'd be the exception to need more.

I was diving with a rented PST E8-119. I now own PST hp100 3500psi.

I wear a large ONeill 7mm.

I also agree with this statement. I dive in Monterey, so cold water. I have tried a 2 different wetsuit, a 7mm and a 8mm. In both case, when I float on surface, I do NOT need fully inflate my wing. My wing is 30lb, when I screeze it, it feels like just about 2/3 half full. I can stay on surface very comfortably. I am carry 16lb of weight. I am so glad I took advices from Tobin and went with 30lb instead of 40lb.

Thanks everyone for your comments, both here and on other threads. I'm going with a 30lbs wing.

I just bought a 27# travel exp wing for single tank diving and had discussions with both my LDS and dive rite who felt strongly that this was plenty of lift for single tank diving. I plan to take mine to galapagos this week and dive it with a 7mm.

Exactly.
The notion of "it's needed for rescue..." demonstrates that they have little understanding of both rescue techniques/procedures and just exactly what a wing's job is.

i used a 50 lbs lift wing when i dove with 12L doubles and a dry suite. More than enough. Now doing single alum tanks in warm water will use a 30lbs lift wing.
