SINGLE most useful thing you have learned?

I stumbled onto scubaboard by accident at a small home stay on a very small remote island in Malaysia Borneo, when a USA traveler scribbled the web address in my travel journal.

At that point I had absolutely no idea that DIR diving existed. I certainly already knew how to have tons of fun on every dive, but I didn't realize there was an efficient way to learn trim, kicks, control in the water, and really did not understand the logic behind gas management, etc. Lacking this knowledge made diving challenging.

So the biggest secret I've learned on this board, is that the GUE Fundies course contains all the base knowledge to make dive skills MUCH better - very quickly.

The added confidence and control in the water = much more freedom, comfort, relaxation and fun!

I just love diving!

I was browsing through this thread thinking, there is no single most important thing that I've learned. The I saw Walter's post on page 9.
I pretty much agree with his assessment.
The whole ocean experience is a life long learning experience. Diving is just one thing to do in the ocean.
But I guess if I had to tell a new diver one thing....for sure, never hold your breath and go up slowly, which I guess leads to ONE thing after all. Survive.

I've learned so many things on SB that I couldn't possibly list them all, but among the most useful underwater have been bouyancy and trim, back kicks, and BP/W systems.

Above water, the most useful thing I have learned on SB is how to interact with others on the internet. It's really a LOT harder than it seems, and I learn new lessons every day. In this area, Lynne, Bob, Pete, Walter, Jim, Thal, and many other regulars have been my mentors. The lessons I have learned have made me a kinder, more thoughtful, and better human being.

Single most useful thing I've learned about diving from any medium....don't hold your breath.
