Do you know of any diver resorts/hotels that either (1) have some sort of dorm, (2) will assign you a roommate or (3) give discounts to single travellers?

I am going to Mexcio for a week and really want to dive in Cozumel but don't know if I can swing a hotel on my own. It is also my vacation so I don't want to stay in total crap.

Anyone have any creative ideas for me?

I don't think that there are any hostels on the island and the room prices are based on double occupancy. I think your options will be to either book a room you can afford alone or get a buddy to travel with you.

There are some pretty economical hotels in town that are not bad at all. They won't be on the water, but none of them are more than 2-3 blocks from it.

Hi, I have a friend here on Cozumel who has negotiated solo prices for many things, if you would like me to try and find her, let me know - it will take me a day or two, but let me know by email jennifer.choate@desteo.com - it's not always just pick up the phone here, I will ride my bike to her house tomorrow and see what her story is if you like. I'll post whatever I found out.

There was a girl by the name of Debbie who had or still has a company called Solo Dive.

Also, give Pelagic Ventures a call. Troy may be able to hook you up.

I met a guy from my home town one one trip there that used to Dive Master in the winter months.....he used to stay at Al Marestal. Room rates are still very reasionable there.

One hotel along the line that Gordon mentioned is Meson San Miguel. It's right on the downtown square, and runs $40-64/night. It's a short walk to the piers for getting picked up by dive boats. I've met some divers staying there on low cost tour packages, and while it isn't a luxury hotel, overall they were happy with it and particularly it's location.

If you don't mind no pool no beach try the EL Marques it is at the end of the Plaza so it is not noisy. It is a family run hotel. Rooms are $40 for one or two guest. The rooms have tv about 5 english channels and a mini fridge. The place is clean but basic.
My son and I will be there March 26-30 and diving with Raul Platas at bottomtime divers. If those are the dates you will be there Raul has room on his boat for those dates. His boat is a small fast boat and only six divers allowed, makes for a nice uncrowded dive.
e-mail the hotel at hotel_el_marques@hotmail.net
Even if your going other dates try Raul www.bottomtimedivers.net raul@bottomtimedivers.net

PS the e-mail for the hotel has underlines between the words that are hidden by the entire underline

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Meson during Thanksgiving Week and it was $35 a night for the room. It is a basic room with AC and a nice balcony. During the high season which is now it may be more but it would be worth a check.

I have seen a number of single divers in Coz and they have always been paired up with no problem.

That too!

If your budget is a bit higher, Scuba Club Cozumel is all inclusive, including diving. I particularly like it for my solo trips to Cozumel because nearly all the guests are divers or with divers. The people you see down in the hammocks and in the restaurants are the same ones you were out diving with earlier in the day and it's very easy to meet and mix. Much more singles friendly than a normal resort.
