The salesperson at the dive shop did recommend "food grade" silicone only to me. I said "food grade? that's ridiculous!! they make a grade that you can eat?"

It makes sense what you say rcontrera-the "non-food grade" silicone would probably be in a petrol based medium and for that reason would not be edible. Since it would be petroleum based it would make an excellent latex dissolver-goodbye latex seals. Your reasoning makes perfect sense why manufactureres don't want it applied to suits if it's not food grade-it would leave the residue on a suit and make the glue more difficult to apply.

I did apply "food grade" to my suit from a pump bottle-it was obviously water based cause it came out watery with white patches.
