Jeesh all these people posting how they want to dive SM (and only SM) are frustrating. I mean seriously I dive backmount, I dive sidemount, sometimes I use a scooter, sometimes not, sometimes I use my own boat, sometimes a charter... All depends on the dive. Shoot I'd dive naked if I could and probably dive a CCR or an SCR if I thought it was the right tool for the job and I had the money for more toys.

I don't get these people saying one tool is the greatest thing for all dives. I also don't get the "you gotta stay proficient by diving the same setup all the time". If I accepted that logic I'd have 4 stages, 2 deco gases, an SMB, a reel, cookies and arrows, a scooter, and a boat for every dive...

Ok I'm done ranting now :p

A GUE instructor was quizzing me on why I still had my right hip D-ring and what did I attach there. I asked him "where else do you attach your metal detector?"

Every environment has its acceptable configurations, for Maritime Archaeology neither DIR or SM are particularly useful systems. Once we accept the fact that there are different tools for for every dive (with a lot of overlap), well, these boards will be a lot quieter! :rofl3:

As an aside, I personally would pass on diving naked. Some things just look like "bait"....

All the best, James

it's annoying. sidemount is a very useful tool. but the same instructors pushing it like this are the ones who bitched about george saying the same **** about backmounted doubles

I only know a few instructors pushing SM. Most seem to be divers who have no clue that they can do everything they aspire to in backmount (possibly easier on the learning curve, certainly for less $$)

I like my SM rig, but (for instance) it sucks for multistage dives with dry gloves. Also less than optimal for boat dives. Kicks as* for hiking in tanks from car to cave, esp my lp45s those are downright dreamy to dive SM.

almost all of them here are pushing it hard

My instructor friends are getting asked about teaching it up here, and they don't even dive SM - never even tried it. I know its a fad but seriously. Its great for some things, but absolutely sucks for others. I know I'm horrible at exploiting a market even when its smacking me in the face lol.

I don't push any rig, but I've yet to see a sidemount instructor act like George did. They'd have to get a WHOLE lot worse. To this day I've never seen any sidemount instructor threaten to kill another instructor over a chosen configuration, including the sidemount instructor George threatened to kill.
