Hey folks.....been a long time............I just turned on my 5050 for the first time in about one year........getting ready to go on a trip.........
The screen is a total series of horizontal lines which appear to be vibrating also. When I take a picture...........it is all distorted. The camera has gotten very little use and has never been wet...........and of course I am out of the country.......so can't just bring it into someone that can help.
Perhaps it is something someone is familiar with. Many thanks in advance for your help.

First thing to try is a new set of batteries. Usualy if a display is doing weird things, the batteries are low. If you've already tried that, then it might need a trip to the shop.

Check to see if there is an Oly service centre maybe near where you are - you might get lucky.

Try a new set of batteries and cross your fingers.

He sounds a little sick!

You might have to consider a new rig if you want to shoot...

ooh, doesn't sound good...

I hope its not the CCD, but this is what a quick google search found...

Olympus C-5050 or How could CCD break down in 18 months

Webin Manzana, Feb 22, 2005; 11:51 a.m.

I have an 18-month old Olympus C-5050 Digital Camera which I bought new for US$780.00 and used for only about 500 exposures since I bought it. A couple of months ago, when I took it out of my closet to use, I discovered that the shutter won't work and it displays only strange bars on the LCD display.
When I took the camera to the Olympus authorized repair center they told me that the CCD sensor is out, and to replace it will cost $200.00 at least. I know that the CCD sensor is the heart of the digital camera and I wonder how it could break down in only 18 months while sitting idle in a closet! I wrote Olympus Camera of Japan and asked that they repair the camera free of charge, but they refused saying that it's already out of warranty for 6 months. I argued that CCD sensors should not break down in 18 months, but to no avail.
In my 48 years, I had the pleasure of owning several cameras that still work great after 10, 20 years but this is the first time I had a sad experience with an 18-month old camera.
This is obviously a quality problem. Not to mention that this camera's functions are all too slow.

You know, that takes AGES to do in PP ;)

not unless you have CS3 and the new CCD gone bad filter...:eyebrow:

sngldyver, sorry for the bad jokes... Maybe a long shot but does the 5050 have any kind of hardware reset (press a bunch of buttons at the same time?).

.....Many thanks for all your help...........although a bit of good news might have been nice.............Now to look for some place in Medellin, Colombia to bring it into.....................that's going to be fun..........

All the best.....
