34# looks like a candidate for the DUI harness system.........

34# looks like a candidate for the DUI harness system.........

34# is with the current rental jacket-style BCD. It's actually divided up between a 20# belt and 8# in each of the ditchable pouches on the BCD. When I go to a bp/w, I'll either do the Hammerhead cold water setup or a SS bp and weighted STA, or Tobin's SS plate and weight plates. In any case, the "ditchable" amount would come down by at least 10#. The reason I like the idea of going with the DUI is that it looks like a clean setup that would be easy to dump in the event of an emergency and I wouldn't have two buckles in the front to possibly confuse, but I don't know if it would interfere with things like can lights on the waist band.

just a "little" thing, but if you are horizontal and using a smaller sized wing (not a 60# singles wing in other words) the air will vent in a couple of seconds from the lower dump valve and you will already be in a "flared" position which will greatly slow your initial ascent. Plus you shouldn't have much air in the wing anyway, unless you are overweighted - Your wing will only need enough air at the beginning of a dive to account for the weight of the air in your tank, and exposure suit compression.

You also have the air in your lungs which you can expel rapidly to help slow your ascent - as you can tell most of this is bound up in being aware of and in control of your bouyancy.

As to weighting I like having my weight ditchable in 6# increments as that is what my Tank swing is approximately. I have 2 ditchable pouches with 6# each on my waist strap and a 6# weight belt. I would put all in non-ditchable except for 6# if I could, but my trim requires the current weighting configuration if I want to keep ditchable weight at a minimum in case of accidental loss.

Aloha, Tim

If dropping the belt is a concern get a DUI Weight & Trim harness. I got one to use with my drysuit and it eliminates the potential of the belt falling from your hips. It also carries the weight very comfortably and gives you some great freedom in where you carry the weight, especially if you have floaty feet.

As an alternative there are some "suspenders" that you can add to a webbed belt. they run $30 - 40 dollars. Should you ever need to ditch however it will be all or nothing and it is not as elegant with 3 buckles to work.

Thanks Pete. Does the DUI Weight and Trim harness fit OK with a bp/w Hog harness? It seems to me that the weight pouches would sit right where the waist harness would go. If it does fit, could I still fit a can light on the waist strap?

Thanks,
John

I'm not Pete but I've got the II version and it's never interfered with anything, including waist band and lights - they're very adjustable. Actually, the adjustability is very nice since it allows you to position the weight where you need it for best trim.
